TESTIMONIALS

Paige Byrne Shortal has been a regular contributor to Celebration magazine since 2005. She brings deep academic credentials in theology and years of experience as a pastoral assistant to her writing skills in the areas of liturgy and spirituality. She writes prayers, scriptural reflections and feature articles for Celebration, the monthly worship resource of the National Catholic Reporter. Paige's real gift is in her great appetite for life, an eye that sees what is most essential and most human. This is reflected in her writing, which flows from her like an ongoing chronicle that is both personal and universal.

Paige is a pleasure to edit. She understands what editors do (and actually appreciates us), welcomes constructive criticism, and is extremely flexible when asked to make changes. She also understands the importance of deadlines and word-length, topic, and scope requirements. Her writing is clear and focused; when appropriate, she adds personal details that help readers relate the topic to their own lives. Our readers frequently ask where they can read more of her writing. I love working with Paige and wish all authors were like her.

Paige serves as lead ritualist for Catholic Healthcare Partners' annual Governance Retreat & Academy. This program is designed to provide education, liturgies, prayer and renewal for our sponsors, board members, physician leaders and senior staff. Paige and her team have a wonderful talent for linking our program themes and speakers with our healing ministry through her written speaker introductions,  prayers and reflections in daily ceremonies and liturgies. Paige thoughtfully leads her team to interpret and integrate all of these aspects in our planning and during our program. We have found that developing professionally and personally-fulfilling relationships always results in both better programs, as well as in more deeply satisfying experiences. Paige proves the point. We are delighted to report that Paige has been part of our healing ministry ... and CHP family ... for 12 years.

Editors keep a ledger on every writer we encounter, tracking the good and bad. Admonishing marks appear for not meeting deadlines, for offering frothy content, or for just being ill-tempered. When asked to provide this endorsement for Paige, I immediately consulted the ledger … and found only good things. As a former Acquisitions Editor of Liguori Publications, I worked with Paige for many years on a variety of projects. She is a bright, amiable, careful, sensitive writer, capable of handling challenging material with great subtlety and skill. I recommend her to one and all without reservation.

Paige Byrne Shortal is a writer I wish I could put in a jar to have on hand for every circumstance. Her insightful, energetic style is always a welcome addition to Ministry & Liturgy. Her work is well-organized and on-target, addressing topics with confidence. She does a fine job of documenting sources and pays close attention to ML’s style, so she keeps our copyeditors happy. She meets or beats deadlines and is flexible when we need to make adjustments for space. In short, she’s simply a pleasure to work with.
